Trace Elements Analysis in Gold by ICP-OES With DSOI

Accurate determination of trace elements in high-purity gold is essential for verifying material quality and meeting international standards such as ISO 15093 and ASTM B562-95. This application report outlines a robust methodology for elemental analysis using ICP-OES, enabling laboratories to quantify impurities in gold samples with exceptional precision. By analyzing trace elements—including silver, copper, lead, and platinum—and subtracting their concentrations from 1000‰, the purity of gold can be reliably calculated, even at levels exceeding 999‰.

The study demonstrates how ICP-OES supports the detection of more than 40 trace elements in gold with the sum of detection limits below 29 mg/kg. Sample preparation involves aqua regia digestion and calibration with certified standards, ensuring reproducibility and compliance. The method’s accuracy was validated through spiked sample recovery tests, showing excellent agreement with expected values. This approach provides a fast, standardized solution for laboratories tasked with high-throughput analysis of precious metals.

Powered by the SPECTRO GENESIS ICP-OES platform, the system delivers full-spectrum capture in under three seconds and completes analyses—including replicates and rinsing—in less than three minutes. Its Dual Side-on Plasma Observation enhances sensitivity and stability, making it ideal for demanding trace metal analysis workflows.

Key Benefits:
- Confidently verify gold purity up to 999.97‰ through trace impurity analysis
- Comply with ISO and ASTM standards for precious metal testing
- Achieve fast, automated ICP-OES analysis with high sensitivity and reproducibility
